Tottenham have been urged to keep hold of Gareth Bale… but also told they MUST play him.

Bale rejoined Spurs on loan from Real Madrid last summer but has been restricted to just 12 appearances due to ongoing fitness and injury problems.

The Wales international has started only eight times for Jose Mourinho’s side with most of those coming in the Europa League.

Reports have been circulating that Tottenham could cut short Bale’s loan spell but talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose thinks that would be the wrong move.

The former Charlton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace midfielder told talkSPORT: “If he’s staying at Tottenham – and I still would keep Gareth Bale – then you have to play him.

“There are question marks over his fitness of course, but we are never going to know how fit he is until he plays.

“He got some minutes today (Sunday) which is good, but if you are Jose Mourinho you are paying him a lot of money – I believe £220,000 of the £600,000-a-week he’s on.

“Do you really want to send him back to Real Madrid and put him in that scenario?

“For me, you’ve got to give him minutes. If he stays you’ve got to give him some game time and show that he’s still got it.

“He’s still got until the summer and when he first arrived you could see the impact he made on the team.

“Even today he hit a tame free-kick and it was, ‘oh, unbelievable’; I think [talkSPORT commentator] Sam Matterface said the goalie will have a poster of that on his wall – that’s the impact the guy has.

Jamie O’Hara admits Gareth Bale’s return to Spurs has been a bit of a failure but insists Diego Costa is not the answer as Jose Mourinho will not be able to fit him into his system

“If he can get anywhere near 60 or 70 per cent… but he’s had a long time to get there.

“The problem is he comes in, has a few games… and gets injured. You are looking at 40 or 50 per cent of his fitness.

“Ability wise, he has not really shown any of what we know Gareth Bale has got ability wise. He needs game time.

“You look at where Tottenham are in the league and can they afford to risk someone like Gareth Bale and hope he produces.”
