Tony Cascarino has backed a Premier League team to win the Champions League after a five-year barren spell in the competition.
English football is set to have five sides competing in the knockout stages, should Liverpool avoid defeat against Spartak Moscow tonight, after an impressive group stage showing.
Manchester City are currently the favourite English representative to win the trophy outright having won all five of their fixtures in the lead up to their final game against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Elsewhere, Manchester United and Tottenham will progress to the last-16 as group winners.
And Cascarino expects a Premier League team to show their worth on the European stage after a series of underwhelming seasons in the competition.
“I totally see a Premier League team winning the Champions League,” Cascarino told talkSPORT host Jim White.
“I really think that one of them will turn up in the final and will handle themselves brilliantly.
“The only team that could achieve a 100 per cent record in the group are Manchester City – if they win tonight they’ll have a 100 per cent record in the group stages.
“A lot of it is about how they’re playing today but by the time we get to February, can they show the same level of consistency?
“All of them have nearly won their groups. Liverpool can win their group tonight, which I expect them to do, that is a fantastic achievement.
Chelsea, who were the most recent English team to win the competition in 2012, finished second in Group C behind Roma and could face either Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16.
But Cascarino does not expect Antonio Conte’s Premier League-winning side to fear anyone ahead of Monday’s draw.
“Who would want to play against the calibre of managers at our leading clubs?
“The talent, manager-wise, is just extraordinary and Conte has done an unbelievable job considering he’s lost his main target-man in Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic.
“And they had Eden Hazard out for the early part of the season and didn’t quite hit the ground running.
“But what a tune they’re getting out of him at the moment. Because Eden is playing as good as he did when he won the Player of the Year.
“Chelsea are a team that a lot of teams will fear and they can upset a lot of clubs around Europe.”
