The United States extended their lead to 10½ to 5½ and need just 3½ points from Sunday’s singles matches to retain the Solheim Cup after day two in Iowa.

European pair Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Anna Nordqvist won their fourball 4&2, but the US took the remaining three matches on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier the teams shared the morning foursomes, with two points each.

The contest concludes with Sunday’s 12 singles matches and Charley Hull is expected to return for Europe.

England’s Hull sat out the whole of Saturday’s play with a wrist injury.

The tee times for Sunday have been moved forward to start at 15:31 BST, because of the threat of bad weather.

The US need 14 points to retain the trophy, while Europe need 14½ points to regain it.

Despite the deficit, European captain Annika Sorenstram says her team will not give up and drew on her own experience of becoming the first female player to shoot a 59 16 years ago.

“There have been a lot of comebacks in sports in general,” she said. “Let’s not just focus on just golf.

“March 16, 2001, before I teed off, nobody had shot 59.

“I’m still the only one that’s done that. I know it’s possible. There are a lot of things I can bring up that’s possible. And history can be made.

“Hope is the last thing that’s going to leave us and we’re determined. We didn’t fly these miles to not put up a fight. The fight is not over yet.”
