The last two Grand Slam champions, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, headline the Canadian Open in Toronto, the first of two hard court Masters events this summer.
Nadal has won the title twice in 2005 and 2008 while Djokovic has taken it four times in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016. Rafa, though, hasn’t played in Toronto since 2010!
Last year, Alexander Zverev stunned Roger Federer for his first Canadian title. The German returns fresh off a second straight Washington title.
Overall, the event will feature 26 of the Top 27 players. Among those absent are three former champions Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tomas Berdych will also miss the event.
Stan Wawrinka took Murray’s wildcard when the Scot announced he would not participate. He opens against Nick Kyrgios!
In the quarterfinals, the top seeded Nadal could meet Marin Cilic, Juan Martin del Potro is set to face John Isner, Grigor Dimitrov is drawn to duel Kevin Anderson and Dominic Thiem is projected to test Alexander Zverev.
Seeded just outside the Top 8 and No. 9, instead of a bye Djokovic will meet in his first round Hyeon Chung who beat the Serb at the Australian Open.
Other interesting matchups see Canadian phenom and 2017 semifinalist Denis Shapovalov battle Jeremy Chardy. Also to note, Schwartzman-Edmund, Tiafoe-Cecchinato, Harrison-Bautista Agut, Dzumhur-Tsitsipas and Sock-Medvedev.
On Monday, Milos Raonic debuts against No. 10 seed David Goffin. His countryman Vasek Pospisil is also featured on Centre Court against Borna Coric.
Kyle Edmund will meet Diego Schwartzman.
