Manchester United’s tough start to the season continued on Saturday afternoon against Brighton.
Bruno Fernandes became renowned for his penalties last season but this time gave one away as he clipped man of the moment Tariq Lamptey in the area.
The Video Assistant Referee checked the incident, as they always do, and it confirmed the decision.
From 12 yards, French striker Neal Maupay was pitted against David de Gea.
He strode forward and clipped a slightly curled Panenka beyond his Spanish adversary with the long looped arc of the strike giving De Gea time to adjust but only enough to watch it rustle the net.
It gave Graham Potter’s side a deserved lead but the scores were level again within minutes.
A set-piece for Manchester United from the left found Nemanja Matic at the back post and he turned the back across goal and into the path of Harry Maguire who, while entangled with Lewis Dunk, was able to force his opponent to nudge into his own net.
Although the scoreline was 1-1 at half-time, throughout the first half the Seagulls gave the Red Devils plenty to worry about.
Leandro Trossard hit the post twice, first in the ninth minute of match as he took a touch on the edge of the effort and unleashed a swerving strike.
His second strike kissed the upright after the Belgian drilled an effort on goal.
It wasn’t the last time Brighton bothered the woodwork guarded by David de Gea, Adam Webster’s slow looping header hit the crossbar to make it hat-trick.
Manchester United were the first side with the ball in the back of the net, though, a swift move down the left saw Marcus Rashford receive the ball and find Mason Greenwood, who stabbed into the goal.
Rashford, though, was in an offside position when he received the ball and was correctly pulled up for his misdemeanour.
